Rock Springs Main Street/URA Launches Youth Advisory Council to Elevate Student Voices in Downtown Planning

Last Updated 2/16/2026

The Rock Springs Main Street/Urban Renewal Agency (URA) is excited to announce the formation of a new Youth Advisory Council, a standing advisory body designed to bring youth perspectives directly into Downtown planning, programming, and decision-making.

The Youth Advisory Council will function similarly to one of the organization’s standing committees, providing input and recommendations to the Rock Springs Main Street/URA Board of Directors. Members will represent the voices of young people in the community and help ensure Downtown Rock Springs continues to evolve as a welcoming, vibrant place for all generations.

The council is open to students ages 15–18 who live in or attend school in Rock Springs. Applications are now being accepted through the Rock Springs Main Street/URA website.

“This council is about listening, learning, and building leadership,” said Maria Mortensen, chairwoman of the Rock Springs Main Street/URA. “Young people experience Downtown differently than adults do. Their ideas, energy, and perspective are critical as we work to create a district that truly reflects the needs of our entire community.”

Rooted in Community-Driven Strategy
The Youth Advisory Council grew directly out of Rock Springs Main Street/URA’s recently completed Transformation Strategy process, facilitated by Main Street America and Wyoming Main Street. The strategy identifies the importance of cultivating a welcoming environment for youth and new residents and specifically recommends forming a youth advisory committee to inform Downtown initiatives and programming

By engaging students early, the organization hopes to:

  • Foster civic engagement and leadership development
  • Create stronger connections between youth and Downtown businesses, events, and spaces
  • Gain insight into how Downtown can better serve teens, families, and young adults
  • Encourage long-term community investment and pride among future leaders
