The National Trust Main Street Center is a program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The Center is the nation's leader in preservation-based revitalization, providing assistance, information, and leadership to grassroots-based organization around the country. In the 1970's, the Nation Trust created its unique Main Street approach to commercial district revitalization, a methodology that combines historic preservation with economic development. Today, its advocates preservation-based commercial district revitalization as an ethic that all communities can use to revive their traditional commercial areas. In 2006, The City of Rock Springs became a Wyoming Main Street Community and has adopted the Main Street Four-Point Approach. As a unique economic development tool, the Main Street Four-Point Approach is the foundation for local initiatives to revitalize downtown districts by leveraging local assets from cultural or architectural heritage to local enterprises and community pride. This comprehensive strategy fosters incremental improvement in four broad areas:
Wyoming Main Street works in partnership with the National Main Street Center in order to provide information, technical assistance, research, and advocacy to communities interested in preserving and revitalizing their downtown districts. In May of 2009, Rock Springs Main Street received the Innovation Award, which recognizes communities for their excellence, originality and effectiveness in Downtown Revitalization through Historic Preservation.
Today, more than 1700 communities in 37 states utilize the Main Street Approach. Throughout these communities, nearly 100,000 buildings have been rehabilitated across the United States, and the amount of public and private investment in physcial improvements tops $17 billion. For every $1 invested through public and private sectors in Main Street project nationwide, an average of $32 is reinvested in the community. |
