Plans for a community garden are slowly taking shape and plots of land will soon be available for community members looking for a little space to grow their own fruits and vegetables. The vacant lot located on the corner of North Front and M Street originally housed an apartment complex, but many of you probably remember it as just a vacant lot used for parking.
During the Summer of 2009, the McCurtain Family along with the Richards Family agreed to lease the land for $1. Shortly thereafter, community youth programs cleaned the lot of trash, debris and rocks, while the Parks and Recreation Department leveled the lot and ensured proper use of water lines and electricity.
The curb has been made wheelchair accessible and the fence was put in place July of this year.
Volunteers will be getting together at the end of August to put in the raised garden beds, a gazebo and other community garden necessities. The entire lot will be wheelchair accesible through concrete pathways that are being donated by Chavez Concrete. THANK YOU CHAVEZ CONCRETE! NOWCAP has graciously agreed to watch over the gardens as well as maintain them by watering and pulling weeds. Stay tuned for more pictures as the community garden develops. If you are interested in volunteering for this project, please call the URA office (307) 352-1434 and we will connect you to the project coordinator. |
