Dreams of revitalizing the old West/Rock Theater on 618 Broadway became a reality as the State Loan and Investment Board approved the City of Rock Springs Urban Renewal Agency (URA) for a $1,493,946 Community Facilities Grant on January 28th.
In an effort to revitalize and promote economic growth in the downtown area, the URA purchased the theater in 2008 with intentions of creating a community based establishment engaging children and adults in the performing arts. The facility will serve as a community gathering place and will accommodate movies, theatrical and cultural performances, and youth oriented activities. The City of Rock Springs, URA, and Rock Springs Renewal Fund, Inc., have partnered together and are dedicated to restoring, operating, and maintaining an accessible, affordable year-round facility for residents of Rock Springs and Sweetwater County.
Passion for the theater and how it used to be, and now can be, runs deep amongst the dedicated volunteers who have been sorting out details and planning for the renovation project. Because of the Community Facilities Grant, these plans will finally be set in motion, and the theater will once again be the gem of downtown Rock Springs.
Anyone interested in becoming a part of the theater renovation are welcome to attend the Theater Committee meetings on the second Tuesday of every month, 5:30pm at the URA office.
